Brant J. Hellwig joined NYU Law in 2022 as the James S. Eustice Professor of Taxation and Faculty Director of the Graduate Tax Program. He has co-authored casebooks covering a variety of federal taxation topics such as Estate and Gift Taxation, Partnership Taxation, and Business Taxation. He was commissioned by the United States Tax Court to author an updated and expanded treatise that explores the court’s history and evolving jurisdiction. Professor Hellwig teaches a range of tax courses including Taxation of Property Transactions, Estate and Gift Taxation, Partnership Taxation, and Corporate Taxation. His scholarship is widely varied, addressing topics such as the income tax treatment of deferred payment obligations and the constitutional nature of the United States Tax Court. Prior to his tenure at NYU Law, he served as Dean at Washington and Lee University School of Law and was a faculty member at the University of South Carolina School of Law. He is a proud alumnus of NYU’s Graduate Tax Program, having earned his LL.M. in 2000 and receiving the Harry J. Rudick Memorial Award for distinction in the program. Before commencing his academic career at NYU in 2001 as Acting Assistant Professor, he worked as an attorney advisor to the Honorable Juan F. Vasquez at the United States Tax Court.
