Biography

Brendan Leung is an Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Oral Sciences at Dalhousie University’s School of Biomedical Engineering. His research program primarily focuses on developing advanced tissue construct platforms and assay technologies aimed at understanding the fundamental phenomena that govern tissue homeostasis and responses to human diseases. Leung's multidisciplinary group is engaged in innovative research projects that include creating in vitro tools to examine the role of human-associated microbes in chronic diseases such as metabolic syndrome, fibrosis, and cancer. His current projects utilize cutting-edge methods, such as bioprinting, to combine various tissue components and recapitulate tissue-level phenomena, enabling researchers to gather significant measurements pertaining to cellular organization and remodeling. Through collaborations and the development of novel therapeutic interventions, his work aims to address deficiencies in contemporary cancer treatments while offering insights into the interactions between human microbiota and health. Leung's contributions to the field include several significant publications that delve into microscale 3D collagen cell culture and the dynamics of bacterial biofilms within epithelial contexts.
