Brendan Leung is an Associate Professor at Dalhousie University in the Faculty of Dentistry. He has a background in biomedical engineering, having received his undergraduate training in biochemistry and chemical engineering at the University of Ottawa. He began his research career as an undergraduate trainee in Dr. Benjamin Tsang's lab, investigating the roles of XIAP in ovarian cancer chemoresistance. Dr. Leung earned his Master’s and Doctorate in biomedical engineering from the University of Toronto, where he was supervised by Dr. Michael Sefton and specialized in cardiac tissue regeneration. He joined Dr. Shuichi Takayama's group at the University of Michigan to research polymeric liquid scaffolds for host-microbe co-culture systems. In 2016, he started his research group at Dalhousie University and, in 2022, was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure, receiving the Dalhousie President’s Research Excellence Award. His research focuses on the development of advanced tissue constructs and assay technologies to understand tissue homeostasis and maladaptation in human diseases, particularly the role of human-associated microbes in chronic diseases such as metabolic diseases, fibrosis, and cancer.
