Brendan Manning is the Barry R. Irene T. Bloom Professor and Chair of the Department of Molecular Metabolism at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He received his PhD from Yale University in 2000 and completed his postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School in 2004. As a faculty member, he was part of the newly established Department of Genetics and Complex Diseases, which was later renamed to Molecular Metabolism. He is the inaugural recipient of the National Cancer Institute’s Outstanding Investigator Award. His research focuses on defining the molecular interface between cellular signaling networks and metabolic networks, which is critical for understanding normal physiology and diseases associated with metabolic dysregulation, including cancer, diabetes, and aging-related diseases. His lab specifically studies the regulatory mechanisms and functions of the signaling network that converges on the tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) protein complex and the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), which relays a variety of extracellular and intracellular growth signals that control the balance of anabolic and catabolic metabolism in cells, tissues, and tumors.
