Dr. Brendan O Leary

Biography

Brendan O’Leary is the Lauder Professor of Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania and an Honorary Professor at Queen's University Belfast. He holds degrees from Keble College, Oxford University and the London School of Economics. Professor O’Leary has published extensively, being the author or co-author of thirty books and hundreds of articles in peer-reviewed journals. Notable works include ‘Treatise on Northern Ireland’ published by Oxford University Press, which received critical acclaim and various awards, including the James S. Donnelly Sr. Book Prize. He has held various prestigious fellowships and is actively engaged in political consultancy, advising organizations such as the United Nations and the European Union on matters of power-sharing and conflict resolution. His research interests include territorial restructuring, power-sharing systems, and the Irish peace process. Throughout his career, O'Leary has been recognized as a leading scholar in political science, particularly in the context of multinational societies and federalism, showcasing his contributions through numerous awards and honors throughout the years. His recent work includes a Fulbright Fellowship at the National University of Ireland, Galway, and receiving the Brian Farrell Prize from the Political Studies Association of Ireland in 2023 for his book, 'Making Sense of United Ireland.'
