Biography

Brendon Larson is a Professor at the University of Waterloo in the School of Environment, Resources and Sustainability. He is known for his interdisciplinary work that examines the relationship between people and nature, focusing on conservation actions influenced by ecological, social, and technological changes. Brendon is a lifelong naturalist with training in biodiversity science, evolutionary ecology, and taxonomy. His current book project, titled "Naturalists’ Paradox: Love Nature, Harm Nature," is expected to be published by McGill-Queen’s University Press in Spring 2026 and consolidates decades of research experience. He has published three books, 90 refereed papers, and 50 consulting reports, as well as numerous newspaper articles. Brendon is an engaging speaker, having delivered over 80 lectures, including more than a dozen keynote addresses across 20 countries on six continents. His recent research has focused on the factors affecting people's connection to nature, such as cultural and religious variations and eco-anxiety among children. He has examined critical debates in conservation, particularly invasive species and assisted colonization in the context of socio-ecological changes. Brendon served as President of Ontario Nature and was an Associate Dean at Waterloo, where he also teaches courses in ecology and biodiversity.
