Biography

Brett Gadsden is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at Northwestern University, specializing in 20th-century African American history with a particular focus on black political and social history, black freedom struggles, and issues of racial discrimination and segregation. His book, North South: Delaware, Desegregation, Myth American Sectionalism, published by the University of Pennsylvania Press in 2013, examines the historical efforts to desegregate public education in Delaware. Gadsden's research demonstrates the significance of geographic sectionalism and highlights how political actions shaped race relations and influenced education policies. He is currently working on a new book, From Protest Politics: Making ‘Second Black Cabinet,’ which explores how African Americans have navigated political spaces during the Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon administrations. His academic contributions include articles and studies that interrogate the dynamics of racial formation and the socio-political context of black freedom struggles in American history.
