Biography

Brett Maurer joined the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Washington in 2017. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Syracuse University in 2009 and 2011, respectively, and his Ph.D. from Virginia Tech in 2016. Maurer's primary research focus is on geotechnical earthquake engineering, employing data science methods in geotechnics to address various topics including soil liquefaction, landslides, paleoseismology, hazard mitigation economics, in-situ remote site characterization, and post-earthquake investigation. His contributions to teaching and research have been recognized with numerous awards including the 2016 Norman Medal from the American Society of Civil Engineers, the National Science Foundation CAREER Award, and the DesignSafe Outstanding Dataset Award. Additionally, he was honored with the 2021 Early Career Researcher Award from the U.S. Universities Council on Geotechnical Education and Research and the 2022 Arthur Casagrande Award from the ASCE Geo-Institute, as well as the 2023 Outstanding Earthquake Spectra Paper Award. Maurer has also received accolades for his outstanding teaching and mentorship within the department and college.
