Biography

Brett Stalbaum is a research theorist specializing in information theory, database, and software development, and is known as a serial collaborator. He co-founded the Electronic Disturbance Theater in 1998 and developed FloodNet, software used to support the Zapatista movement's websites. His work has been recognized by Forbes Magazine for its impact as a form of electronic art. Stalbaum has engaged in various individual collaborative projects, publishing widely in digital art, aesthetics, and location-aware media. He has previously served as an editor for Switch, a new media journal, and has been involved with the CADRE digital media lab. His current projects focus on landscape experimentation and interdisciplinary theories related to software development and location-aware media, including participation in the C5 Landscape Initiative and development of an open-source API for processing GPS and GIS data. Stalbaum's teaching experience includes positions at San Jose State University and Evergreen Valley College, specializing in programming languages and web-based distance education. Currently, he is a full-time lecturer and coordinator of the Interdisciplinary Computing Arts Major (ICAM) at UC San Diego, where he teaches students to integrate art and technology in innovative ways.
