Biography

Brian Beach is a Senior Research Fellow in Social Policy and Gerontology at University College London, specifically within the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health. His research focuses on the intersections of ageing and policy, particularly regarding the dynamics surrounding work, retirement, and health. Current projects include analyses of working conditions, cognitive health, and dementia. In April 2024, he will begin a position at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden, where he will conduct register-based studies on sickness absence and disability pension policy. Prior to his work at UCL, Brian spent eight years at International Longevity Centre UK, researching various topics related to population ageing, loneliness, serious illness, retirement, housing, and employment. He has also engaged with the UK Parliament, providing oral evidence on employment and housing for older people. Brian earned his doctorate in 2016 from the University of Oxford, where he studied the concept of employability in the labour market behavior of older workers. He has an extensive academic background including a Bachelor of Arts from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Master of Arts, and he completed the TransAtlantic Masters Program in Political Science. Brian is multilingual, speaking French, Italian, and Swedish, with varying competence in Danish, German, and Spanish.
