Biography

Brian Buccola specializes in formal semantics and pragmatics, with further interests in syntax, psycholinguistics, and cognitive science. His research explores how human languages encode meaning and how humans utilize linguistic meanings, as well as the extent to which non-human animals may possess similar capacities. He is particularly interested in the ways in which humans reason based on what an interlocutor has said, thereby drawing inferences related to inferential reasoning in language, which is considered a human-specific trait. His published work has appeared in various academic journals, including Semantics and Pragmatics, Journal of Semantics, Linguistics and Philosophy, Frontiers in Psychology, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Prior to his current position, he held research roles at institutions such as École Normale Supérieure in Paris and Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
