Biography

Brian E. Cairns completed his Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry and chemistry, followed by a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree from the University of British Columbia. He subsequently completed an accredited hospital pharmacy residency and practiced as a clinical pharmacist in Vancouver area hospitals before obtaining his Doctor of Philosophy degree from the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences in 1996. He undertook postdoctoral training at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto, before accepting a faculty position in anesthesiology at Harvard Medical School in Boston. In 2003, he began his faculty position as Canada Research Chair in Neuropharmacology at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. From 2015 to 2019, he was seconded to Aalborg University in Denmark as a professor in the Faculty of Medicine. In 2016, he completed his Doctoral Degree in Medical Science from Aalborg University. His research focuses on the development of preclinical models for chronic craniofacial pain conditions, including migraine headaches and temporomandibular disorders, as well as investigating the biological factors, such as sex-related differences, that contribute to the increased prevalence of these conditions in women.
