Biography

The Crane group studies the structure and function of protein systems that underlie signal transduction, with particular emphasis on processes mediated by redox and photochemistry dependent upon highly cooperative macromolecular assemblies. Their projects include understanding circadian clock light sensors, bacterial transmembrane signaling, nitric oxide enzymology, and the general aspects of protein electron transfer. The research focuses on understanding the interactions between proteins, electrons, and photons in metalloenzymes, and how they stabilize transient intermediates during catalysis. The group utilizes genetic and chemical manipulation of proteins, atomic-resolution structure determination, and novel photochemically triggered experiments using single crystals to explore these complex biochemical processes.
