Biography

Professor Brian Dixon's research focuses on characterizing fish immune systems at the molecular level, providing detailed knowledge of the molecules that are utilized as signals and receptors similar to the mammalian immune system. His work aims to develop effective vaccines and drugs to combat diseases in aquaculture. Currently, Dixon's research is concentrated on Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) receptors, which are crucial molecules that help distinguish between self and non-self in vertebrates. He has isolated expressed MHC genes in fish and developed antibodies that have demonstrated their presence on the surface of fish cells. His investigations have revealed that fish immune systems are compromised at cold temperatures, increasing susceptibility to diseases. In addition to MHC receptors, his research interests extend to Environmental Immunology, Comparative Immunology, Antigen Presentation, and the impact of human activity on aquatic ecosystems.
