Dr. Brian Heaphy

Biography

Brian Heaphy has an academic background in Cultural Studies and a PhD in Sociology. He has previously held lectureships at the University of Leeds and Nottingham Trent University and worked as a research fellow at London South Bank University. His teaching encompasses areas such as gender and sexuality, families, relationships, social change, personal life, social theory, and research methods. His research outputs focus on the implications of social change for living with HIV, sexual intimacies, and the dynamics of chosen families, friendships, and ageing sexualities. He also engages in theoretical research about identities and relationships within the context of social change. Heaphy is currently involved in projects examining dating app usage pre-COVID-19 and its ramifications. His leadership roles have included directing the School of Social Sciences at the University of Manchester, which encompasses Economics, Politics, Philosophy, Social Anthropology, and Sociology. He has also organized capacity-building workshops as part of the ESRC National Centre for Research Methods. His ongoing supervision of PhD topics includes negotiations of identities in diverse social contexts, reflecting his commitment to advancing research on social and personal life dynamics.
