Dr. Brian Heaphy

Biography

Brian Heaphy is a professor of Sociology at the University of Manchester. He has a degree in Cultural Studies and a PhD in Sociology. His previous academic roles include positions at the University of Leeds and Nottingham Trent University, as well as a research fellowship at London South Bank University. His teaching has encompassed critical areas such as gender, sexuality, families, relationships, social change, personal life, and social theory, alongside research methodologies. His research publications center on the complexities of social change in relation to living with HIV, sex intimacies, chosen families, ageing sexualities, friendships, and the intersection of sexualities and class. He has been actively engaged in exploring dating app usage and its implications, particularly in light of social transformation during the COVID-19 pandemic. Heaphy’s current theoretical interests involve the interplay of identities and relationships in the context of social change, focusing on how personal life is shaped by broader sociocultural dynamics.
