Biography

Brian Eugenio Herrera is currently an Associate Professor of Theater at the Lewis Center for the Arts at Princeton University. He is a writer and teacher whose work critically engages the intersections of history, gender, sexuality, and race in U.S. popular performance. He authored the book 'Latin Numbers: Playing Latino in Twentieth-Century U.S. Popular Performance' which was published by the University of Michigan Press in 2015 and received the George Jean Nathan Award for Dramatic Criticism. Additionally, he serves as co-editor for the series 'Performances of American Cultures' published by NYU Press. A performer of autobiographical storywork, Herrera has showcased his performances across various venues in the United States, as well as internationally in Beirut and Abu Dhabi. He is the inaugural resident scholar of the Sol Project, which promotes the work of Latinx playwrights, and he is part of the Core Facilitation Team for ArtEquity. His current scholarly projects include a historical study titled 'A Brief History of Casting' and a narrative portrait of the early 20th-century actress Virginia Calhoun. Herrera is also core faculty in the Program in Gender and Sexuality Studies and a faculty affiliate in American Studies, Music Theater, and Latino Studies at Princeton.
