Biography

Brian is an Associate Professor in the School of Geography and Environmental Science at the University of Southampton. Originally from Canada, he received his PhD in Geography from the University of Toronto. He has held research fellowships at the Martin Prosperity Institute in Toronto and the Department of Social and Economic Geography at Uppsala University in Sweden. Brian's research interests include digital technologies and global competition, particularly how they are reshaping the marketplace for cultural products and the working lives of entrepreneurs and intermediaries within the creative economy. He has published numerous articles, book chapters, and reports on topics related to the music and fashion industries, aesthetic labour, curation, value creation, digital platforms, tourism, and mobilities of 'talent'. In 2012, Brian co-created the annual European Colloquium on Culture, Creativity, and Economy. He is currently researching the spatial dynamics of curation and the trans-local nature of cultural scenes within creative economies in Africa.
