Brian Kane holds degrees from the University of California, Berkeley (B.A. Philosophy, 1996; Ph.D. Music, 2006). Prior to joining the faculty at Yale, he was a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in Music at Columbia University from 2006 to 2008. His scholarly work is interdisciplinary, located at the intersection of music theory, composition, and philosophy. He focuses primarily on 20th century music and examines questions regarding sound and signification. Central themes of his research include music, sound art, the histories and theories of listening, phenomenology, improvisation, music subjectivity, and the technology of sound in relation to music literature and philosophy. His recent work, particularly on acousmatic sound, explores how auditory experiences can be separated from visual ones in phenomenological contexts. His forthcoming book, Sound Unseen, investigates questions of acousmatic sound in a phenomenological context, revealing its relevance to current discussions on musical and non-musical forms of listening.
