Brian Kennett is an Emeritus Professor of Seismology at the Australian National University. He received his Ph.D. in Theoretical Seismology from the University of Cambridge in 1973. He has served as a Lindemann Fellow at the IGPP, University of California, San Diego, and held lectureship positions at the University of Cambridge. Moving to Australia in 1984, Kennett became the president of the International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth's Interior (IASPEI) from 1999 to 2003. His research has included a wide range of topics in seismology and reflection seismology encompassing both theoretical and observational studies of the deep Earth. He has received numerous awards, including the Gold Medal in Geophysics from the Royal Astronomical Society, the Gutenberg Medal from the European Geosciences Union, and the Murchison Medal from the Geological Society of London. Additionally, he has been recognized as a Fellow of both the Australian Academy of Sciences and the Royal Society in London, and he was appointed Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2019. His research interests focus on seismic wavefield characterization and the structure of the Earth, particularly the understanding of subduction zones and development of global reference models for earthquake locations.
