Dr. Brian Ling

Biography

Brian Ling is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Queen's University. He holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University, as well as an M.Phil. and B.Sc. from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. His research primarily focuses on interval-censored data, which are crucial in understanding response failure events that occur within specific time intervals. This data structure is particularly prevalent in clinical trials and longitudinal studies that include periodic follow-ups. Ling is interested in developing inference procedures and goodness-of-fit tests for these data types, recognizing the challenges posed by the slow convergence of nonparametric maximum likelihood estimators to the true distribution. He also works on the challenges in analyzing misclassified data arising from screening tests, aiming to develop efficient estimators through smoothing procedures. His expertise encompasses empirical process theory, asymptotic statistics, optimization theory, and programming skills, all essential for tackling these complex statistical problems.
