Biography

Emeritus Professor in Pediatrics and Medical Genetics, Dr. Brian Lowry earned his medical degree from Queen’s University of Belfast in 1956, following which he completed his D.Sc. focusing on epidemiological studies of congenital malformations. He joined the Division of Medical Genetics at the University of British Columbia in 1964, where he developed clinical genetics programs and provided medical consultation for the BC Health Status Registry. In 1977, he established the Medical Genetics Program in Calgary, subsequently becoming the Head of Medical Genetics at the University of Calgary and the Alberta Children’s Hospital until his retirement in 1998. With a significant impact on the Alberta Hereditary Disease Program, Dr. Lowry spearheaded outreach genetic counseling clinics across Alberta and British Columbia. His research career spans several decades, funded by national and provincial health grants, yielding over 120 peer-reviewed publications. A recognized leader in his field, he has held prestigious positions including president of the Canadian College of Medical Geneticists and received numerous accolades, including the Founders Award and the Alberta Medical Association's Physician Century Award. His contributions have significantly advanced the understanding and surveillance of congenital anomalies in Canada.
