Biography

Brian Mac Cuarta is a fellow at Campion Hall in the Faculty of Theology and Religion at the University of Oxford. He previously served as the director of the Archivum Romanum Societatis Iesu (Jesuit Archives in Rome) and held the position of academic director from 2010 to 2021. His work has focused on the preparation of archival online resources related to Jesuit history, particularly emphasizing the restoration of the Society of Jesus post-1814. His research interests encompass the history of Irish Christianity and Jesuit history. Currently, he is working on a biography of Francis Slingsby, a Catholic convert who lived from 1611 to 1642. Mac Cuarta has edited and contributed to numerous publications, including works on Jesuit missions in early modern Ireland and the dynamics of Catholic communities in colonial society, particularly during the breakdown of 1641. His educational background includes a PhD from Trinity College Dublin, awarded in 2004, and he was conferred a DLitt degree by the National University of Ireland in 2022. He is also a fellow of the Royal Historical Society.
