Biography

Brian McArdell is a scientific researcher at the Swiss Federal Research Institute WSL, specializing in geomorphology and sedimentology. His work focuses on the mechanics of debris flows and rock avalanches, landslide initiation, warning systems, and sediment transport in steep channels. Since 2001, he has been involved in scientific coordination at the Illgraben debris flow observation station, where he utilizes numerical simulations to analyze debris flow and rock avalanche runout. Prior to his current position, he completed post-doctoral research in river engineering and numerical modeling at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Zurich. McArdell obtained his Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from Johns Hopkins University in 1997 and a B.Sc. in Geology from the University of Minnesota in 1988. His ongoing research includes understanding debris flow dynamics through advanced monitoring techniques and developing predictive models for mass movement events in changing climatic conditions.
