Biography

Brian Meeks is a Professor of Africana Studies at Brown University and the Interim Director of the Simmons Center. He served as Chair from 2015 to 2021 and was previously a Professor of Social Political Change and Director of the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies at the University of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica. He has taught at Michigan State University, Florida International University, and Anton de Kom University of Suriname, and has been a Visiting Scholar at Cambridge University and Stanford University. Meeks has published twelve books and edited collections, focusing on subjects such as Caribbean politics and revolutionary theory. His notable works include 'Postcolonial Caribbean: Memory, Imagination, Hope', 'Narratives of Resistance: Jamaica, Trinidad', and 'Paint Town Red', which was published in 2003, and 'Coup Clock Clicks', a volume of poems released in 2018. His research delves into theories of revolution, Caribbean social political thinkers, and the exploration of alternative avenues to prosperity, with a special emphasis on the Caribbean African diaspora.
