Biography

Brian Michael Murphy is an Associate Professor of American Studies at Williams College and a Faculty Associate at the Berkman Klein Center at Harvard University. He holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Studies from Ohio State University, where he was a Presidential Fellow. Murphy's research interests focus on the intersection of technology, culture, and politics, particularly examining the strategic use of immersive technology in live performances and its historical implications in shaping modern empires. He has received several prestigious awards including the Anne Friedberg Innovative Scholarship Award from the Society for Cinema and Media Studies and the Lois P. Rudnick Book Prize from the New England American Studies Association. His writings have appeared in notable publications such as Kenyon Review, Wall Street Journal, and Lapham’s Quarterly. Murphy has also worked as a Fulbright Scholar and received support from the National Endowment for the Humanities and various state arts councils. He has edited significant works including a special issue of Media-N titled “Afterlives of Data” and continues to engage in interdisciplinary scholarship.
