Dr. Brian Murray

Biography

Brian Murray is a Research Professor at the Sanford School of Public Policy, where he also serves as the Director of the Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment & Sustainability. He has a rich background in economics related to energy and climate change policy, leading efforts to design market-based mechanisms to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote low-carbon energy. His extensive consultation work involves advising Congress members, state legislators, and various stakeholders on energy legislative proposals. He has co-authored over 100 publications across diverse disciplines and was a regular contributor to Forbes from 2017-2021. Murray holds a Ph.D. and M.S. from Duke University and a B.S. from the University of Delaware. His notable contributions include serving as the convening lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s Special Report on Land Use and pioneering research in economic modeling for climate and land use policies. He is recognized for his expertise in carbon pricing and regulatory strategies, particularly in creating effective frameworks for managing greenhouse gas emissions.
