Biography

Brian Parks is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Nutritional Sciences at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He holds a PhD and specializes in leveraging mouse-human genetics data to discover genes and pathways contributing to metabolic diseases. His laboratory has developed a systematic approach to integrate big data from mice and humans, allowing for the discovery of previously unknown genes involved in lipid metabolism. Notably, his work has identified and validated the Sestrin1 gene, which mediates feedback inhibition of cholesterol biosynthesis. Currently, he is constructing SNP-SNP interaction maps in mice and is utilizing these maps to investigate modifiers of key metabolic signaling pathways, including FOXO1 and PPAR gamma, that contribute to diabetes and obesity.
