Brian Roth is an Associate Chair Research in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at Michigan State University. His research focuses on understanding the factors that influence aquatic food web structure and function across multiple spatial and temporal scales. By exploring how anthropogenic actions, such as management and harvest, impact food webs, Brian seeks to illuminate feedback loops involving prey choice, movement, and phenomena that occur at larger scales, including species replacement and recruitment failure. His current projects include population dynamics of Walleye in Wisconsin’s Ceded Territory, working alongside the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Great Lakes Indian Fish Wildlife Commission to develop models that assess population responses to varying harvest strategies. Brian also studies nearshore fish communities in the Great Lakes, aiming to clarify the impact of non-native species on these ecosystems. In addition to his research, he teaches courses on Ichthyology and Advanced Fish Ecology, where he integrates hands-on experiences with theoretical learning to enhance student understanding of fish ecology and aquatic systems.
