Biography

Brian Sheil studied Civil Engineering at the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG), focusing on the behavior of deep foundation systems for his PhD. He held a position as a Visiting Scholar at the University of California, Berkeley before joining the University of Oxford in 2014 as a postdoctoral researcher specializing in experimental geotechnics on industry-funded projects. He was promoted to a departmental lecturer in geotechnical engineering in January 2017 and became a Royal Academy Engineering Research Fellow and Junior Research Fellow at St Catherine’s College, Oxford in 2018. In January 2021, he was appointed Honorary Research Senior Lecturer at NUIG and in 2022 he attained the title of Associate Professor at the University of Oxford. Since September 2022, he has served as the Laing O’Rourke Associate Professor of Construction Engineering. His research and teaching focus on optimizing efficiency, safety, and sustainability in underground construction, and his interests include soil-structure mechanics, intelligent construction monitoring, and Bayesian machine learning.
