Biography

Dr. Brian Sonnenberg is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta. He completed his internal medicine residency with a specialty training in Echocardiology at the University of Toronto. Dr. Sonnenberg is a highly regarded clinician, known for his compassion and extensive knowledge in patient care. His contributions to medical education have earned him respect from both trainees and colleagues, highlighting his commitment to sharing knowledge. As a staff cardiologist at the University of Alberta Hospital, Dr. Sonnenberg has a special interest in valvular heart disease and general cardiology, particularly stress echocardiography. Dr. Sonnenberg is actively involved in the teaching of undergraduate medical students and medical fellows, receiving numerous accolades for his contributions to medical education. He has been recognized with several teaching excellence awards, including the Block Year Teaching Excellence awards in 2015 and the 2016 Medical Students’ Association Teacher of the Year award. In 2018, Dr. Sonnenberg was awarded a Certificate of Merit in teaching excellence from the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, as well as the Canadian Association of Medical Education’s Merit Award for his contributions to medical education.
