Professor Dr. Brian Stewart

Biography

Brian Stewart is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology and an Associate Curator at the Museum of Anthropological Archaeology. His research is primarily focused on archaeology, especially the study of prehistoric hunter-gatherers in Africa, with particular emphasis on Southern Africa. His work explores the profound adaptive flexibility of early humans, aiming to investigate and compare human adaptive responses to challenging landscapes through projects such as Adaptations Marginal Environments Middle Stone Age (Project AMEMSA). He conducts rockshelter excavations and geomorphological surveys to understand how early humans learned to cope with their challenging environments over the past 300,000 years. His research interests include the Paleolithic social and spatial organization, the Middle Stone Age in Africa, and the evolution of adaptive flexibility among Southern African foragers, particularly in relation to lithic and ceramic technologies.
