Brian Theyel, M.D., Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor at Brown University specializing in Psychiatry and Human Behavior. His research focuses on basic neuroscience, particularly the unique properties of interneurons and their relationship to neuropsychiatric diseases. Dr. Theyel has identified significant roles that inhibitory interneurons play in regulating brain activity, especially during conditions of heightened neuronal firing. He is working to comprehend the mechanisms through which neurons detect increased brain activity and believes that various mutations affecting inhibitory brain cells may be responsible for human diseases that influence these properties. His methodological approach incorporates advanced techniques such as whole-cell patch-clamp, local field potential recordings, in vitro neuroimaging, and cell-specific gene knockout strategies. Additionally, he supervises psychiatric residents in the Emergency Department at Butler Hospital and teaches courses in psychiatry, including a longitudinal seminar series on Evidence-Based Medicine and co-directing the Brain & Behavior course at the Warren Alpert Medical School. His research is supported by the Brown Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, NINDS, the Norman Prince Neurosciences Institute, the Carney Foundation, and the Simons Foundation.
