Dr. Brian Uy

Biography

Brian Uy is a Scientia Professor of Structural Engineering at the University of New South Wales, appointed in 2023. With a career in civil engineering spanning over 30 years, he has been a leader in the field, previously serving as Head of the School of Civil Engineering at the University of Sydney from 2016 to 2022. His impressive educational background includes a Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering with Honours Class 1 and a PhD from UNSW. Brian has contributed significantly to research, co-authoring 750 publications, including 300 journal articles predominantly in high-impact Q1 journals. He has delivered over 350 conference papers in 35 countries and has been involved in extensive grant funding, securing over $15 million from the Australian Research Council for various projects. He has received multiple accolades, including the John Connell Gold Medal for Structural Engineer of the Year in 2021 and the Sir John Holland Civil Engineer Year Award in 2019. Brian is also a Fellow of several prestigious organizations, including the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering and the Royal Society of New South Wales. He currently supervises numerous PhD and Masters students, fostering the next generation of engineers in his research areas. His fields of research interest include composite steel structures, structural health monitoring, and sustainable construction materials.
