I graduated from Memorial University's undergraduate co-op engineering program in 1988 and obtained a Master of Engineering degree from MUN in 1990. After further graduate studies at Helsinki University of Technology, I earned a Doctor of Science in Technology degree in 1995. I returned to Canada in 1996 and worked at NRC's Institute for Marine Dynamics for several years before joining Memorial University in 1998. I am a Professor in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, where I teach Ocean Naval Architectural Engineering and have served as Chair of the ONAE program, Director of the Ocean Engineering Research Centre, and Associate Dean of Research. I currently hold the Cenovus Energy Research Chair, focusing on safety at sea, and my research concerns the safety of people who work at sea and protection of the marine environment. I work in team settings involving students, researchers from various universities, research institutions, industry, and government, fostering innovation and providing an exciting, supportive learning environment.
