Biography

Brian Wandell is the Stein Family Professor at Stanford University, affiliated with the Psychology department and holding courtesy positions in Electrical Engineering, Ophthalmology, and the Graduate School of Education. He founded Stanford’s Center for Cognitive Neurobiological Imaging in 2007 and has been its continuing faculty director. Wandell also served as deputy director for the Wu Tsai Neuroscience Institute from 2013 to 2021. His research primarily focuses on vision science, addressing topics such as visual disorders, reading development in children, and the use of digital imaging devices and algorithms, particularly with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). His work leverages functional and structural MRI along with behavior testing to model and understand the brain's visual processing functions. His lab has contributed to identifying and understanding the organization of visual field maps in the human brain and the dynamics of color and motion processing. He is also engaged in image systems engineering and has co-founded several companies offering commercial applications of his research.
