Biography

Brienna Perelli-Harris is a Professor of Demography at the University of Southampton. She received her PhD in Sociology from the University of Michigan in 2006 and held a post-doctoral position at the University of Wisconsin until 2008, after which she became a research scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock, Germany. In 2011, she was awarded a European Research Council Starting Grant and moved to the University of Southampton to study the increasing childbearing and cohabitation rates in industrialized countries. Leading a project funded by this grant, she conducted focus group research across nine countries, providing valuable insights into cohabitation trends. Her collaborations span Australia, the United States, Norway, and Germany, where they analyzed the impact of cohabitation on various outcomes, including mental well-being, health, life satisfaction, and wages. Perelli-Harris has also completed an ESRC-funded Secondary Data Initiative grant, which studied relationship quality in the UK compared to European countries, particularly in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic.
