Biography

Briony Horgan is a Professor in the Department of Earth, Atmospheric, Planetary Sciences at Purdue University. Her research specializes in Planetary Science, utilizing data from NASA satellites and rovers, as well as lab and fieldwork on Earth to understand the surface processes that shape Mars and its moons. She is particularly interested in applying mineralogy to investigate weathering and the historical surface environments of Mars, including volcanic, sedimentary, and impact processes on various planetary bodies. Horgan serves as a Co-Investigator and Long-Term Planner for NASA’s Perseverance rover mission and is involved in the Mars Sample Return project. She has been a part of various NASA advisory committees and working groups that prioritize planetary exploration, as well as serving on the Steering Committee for the Mars Exploration Program Analysis Group. In recognition of her contributions, she was awarded the 2022 College of Science Research Award and has been named a University Faculty Scholar at Purdue University.
