Biography

Professor Britta Regli-von Ungern-Sternberg holds the foundation Chair in Paediatric Anaesthesia at the University of Western Australia. She is a specialist paediatric anaesthetist at Perth Children’s Hospital and the inaugural Director of the Institute of Paediatric Perioperative Excellence at UWA, which she founded in 2023. Britta has been recognised as a Member of the Order of Australia for her significant contributions to medicine and paediatric anaesthesia research. She has received numerous accolades, including being a finalist for the Prime Minister’s Prize for Science and the WA Tall Poppy Award. Her research program focuses on improving safety and quality of care in the perioperative environment, with a strong emphasis on multidisciplinary collaboration. Britta's main research interests include the prediction and prevention of respiratory complications during paediatric anaesthesia, the evaluation of airway devices, and the impact of anaesthesia on neurodevelopment in early life. She is also involved in various clinical and research committees and has been acknowledged as a Science Ambassador for Western Australia. She has been awarded Fellowships from prestigious Academies in recognition of her work and was named one of the 50 Remarkable Inspirational Women in Australian Science by Cosmos Magazine in March 2024.
