Biography

Bruce G. Allen is a research professor at the Department of Medicine at the University of Montreal and at the Montreal Heart Institute. He studied the regulation of calcium transport by calmodulin and protein kinase C during his graduate training at the University of British Columbia under the supervision of Basil Roufogalis and Sid Katz. In 1992, following his graduate studies, he began a postdoctoral fellowship on smooth muscle biochemistry mentored by Michael P. Walsh at the University of Calgary. In 1996, Allen accepted a scientist position at the Montreal Heart Institute. Leveraging his doctoral and postdoctoral experience on kinases, he initiated the study of the role of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) in cardiac hypertrophy, focusing on the p38 MAPK pathway. He also demonstrated the presence of beta-adrenergic receptors and endothelin on the nuclear membrane of adult cardiomyocytes. His research now investigates how nuclear GPCRs regulate cardiac function and growth.
