Dr. Bruce Balcom

Biography

Bruce Balcom is a Professor at the University of New Brunswick, specializing in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). His significant contributions to the field include the invention of a new family of MRI methods that allow for visualization of structures containing mobile and immobile protons in various materials, including concrete and polymers. This innovation has positioned the UNB MRI Centre as a pioneering laboratory for material science MRI in North America. Balcom's work addresses the challenges of traditional MRI techniques, enhancing their sensitivity and applicability across various domains. He has directed several fundamental research fronts, including the development of novel MRI hardware and data processing techniques, particularly relevant to industrial applications. His recent collaborations with major international oil companies focus on rock core analysis, utilizing advanced MRI techniques. Over his career, Balcom has been recognized with several awards, including the NSERC Steacie Fellowship and his role as a Canada Research Chair from 2002 to 2009. His ongoing research efforts continue to expand the boundaries of material science using MRI technology.
