Dr. Bruce Cockburn

Biography

Bruce Cockburn is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Alberta. He completed his BSc in Engineering Physics at Queen's University in 1981 and earned his M.Math and PhD in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo in 1985 and 1990, respectively. His doctoral thesis focused on the design and analysis of provably optimal test algorithms for classes of faults in semiconductor memories. Bruce's research interests encompass VLSI design and test, parallel signal processing algorithms and architectures, and the application of field-programmable gate arrays in novel ways. He is recognized for investigating efficient hardware implementations and acceleration for computationally-intensive algorithms, specifically utilizing heterogeneous parallel digital hardware. His work aims to optimize energy consumption in battery-powered devices while ensuring computations are completed within strict time constraints. Bruce is a member of professional organizations including the IEEE Computer Society and the Association for Computing Machinery, and he is a registered Professional Engineer in Alberta, Canada. He actively mentors students, particularly those from underrepresented groups, and participates in initiatives that support their involvement in engineering and technology fields.
