Biography

Bruce Garetz is a Professor and Associate Chair in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at New York University Tandon School of Engineering. He completed his A.B. degree in Chemistry and Physics at Harvard College in 1971 and earned his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1976. Garetz started his academic career as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Toronto before joining the faculty of Brooklyn Polytechnic in 1978. He has served as the Department Chair from 2006 to 2012. His research focuses on the interaction of light with materials, specifically studying laser light scattering and laser-induced nucleation. He investigates micrometer-scale grain structure in block copolymer materials, exploring applications in viscoelastic, adhesive, optical, and electrical materials. Garetz has published over 80 research articles and holds five patents. He has been recognized with the Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship and is a two-time recipient of the Polytechnic Distinguished Teacher Award.
