Biography

Bruce Markell has been a Professor of Bankruptcy Law Practice at Northwestern Pritzker School of Law since 2015. Before this, he held the title of Jeffrey Stoops Professor of Law at Florida State University School of Law from 2013 to 2015. Markell served as a United States Bankruptcy Judge in the District of Nevada starting in 2004, and previously practiced law in Los Angeles for ten years at Sidley & Austin focusing on bankruptcy and business law. He has authored numerous articles on bankruptcy and commercial law, and co-authored four casebooks used in law school curricula. Markell has held visiting professor positions at several prestigious law schools including Harvard Law School and Peking University School of Law in Beijing. He is actively involved in the field as a conferee of the National Bankruptcy Conference, a fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy, and a charter member of the International Insolvency Institute. His consulting work with the International Monetary Fund has included the development of insolvency-related legal frameworks in various countries. In 2022, he received the Lawerence P. King Award from the Commercial Law League of America.
