Biography

Bruce Maxwell is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Education at the Université de Montréal, where he engages in training future teachers and school leaders on themes related to educational law, professional ethics, and the history of educational ideas. Trained as an ethicist and philosopher of education, his research focuses on school law, ethical development among professionals, and ethical and legal issues in education. He first became seriously interested in educational issues while teaching Humanities in the English CEGEP network in the early 2000s. After completing a Bachelor’s and a Master’s in Philosophy at McGill University and Université de Montréal respectively, he taught at the collegiate level until 2003. From 2004 to 2007, he was a lecturer while pursuing his doctoral studies at the Institute of Education Sciences at the University of Münster in Germany. In 2008, he returned to Montreal for a postdoctoral fellowship in ethics at the Center for Research in Ethics at Université de Montréal. He later completed postdoctoral fellowships in neuroethics at the Clinical Research Institute of Montreal and developmental psychology at the University of British Columbia. In 2010, he became a professor at the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières, specializing in educational ethics and law. He has been a professor in school law and professional ethics in teaching at Université de Montréal since 2020.
