Professor Bruce Murray is the Resident Director of the Illinois Program in Vienna. His early development was influenced by a background steeped in Minnesota's German Protestantism and Irish working-class values, alongside involvement in the student movement during the 1960s. He earned a B.A. in German and English, summa cum laude, from Luther College, followed by an M.A. in German Studies from Middlebury College, and a Ph.D. in German Studies from the University of Minnesota, where he completed his dissertation on German film and politics during the Weimar Republic. Over the past fifteen years, Professor Murray has directed the Illinois Program in Vienna. He teaches courses on German literature and culture, as well as European integration, every semester and advises students participating in the AIEP program on German language and diplomatic components. Additionally, he serves as the EU coordinator for the Good Governance Consortium (GGC), which involves a partnership among eight EU and U.S. universities and aims to offer an innovative curriculum for students interested in transatlantic collaboration on political and economic governance. He has also initiated the Environmental Entrepreneurs program to encourage study abroad participants to minimize their carbon footprints.
