Biography

Bruce Shenker's laboratory focuses on mechanisms of immunoregulation, microbial pathogenesis, and immunotoxicity. Over the years, significant progress has been made in understanding the etiology and pathogenesis of oral infectious diseases. Shenker's hypothesis is that the immune system plays a primary role in minimizing and preventing infections, while immunoregulatory abnormalities contribute to the pathogenesis and susceptibility of oral infectious disorders, such as periodontal disease. His investigations have highlighted how periodontal pathogens impair human T- and B-cell function. Particularly, his recent efforts revolve around immunotoxins produced by Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, which exhibits mechanisms that induce G2 arrest in lymphocytes, ultimately leading to apoptosis. The ongoing research aims to unlock the therapeutic potential of such toxins in treating cancer and inflammatory disorders. By studying membrane lipid interactions and cellular signaling pathways, Shenker seeks to elucidate the connections between immune function and oral health.
