Biography

Bruce Sherin’s work focuses primarily on conceptual change science—the process through which everyday understanding of the natural world changes over time with instruction. In his early work, he engaged in design study of novel interventions in physics instruction, with particular emphasis on the role of symbolic representations. As part of his work, he explicated a theory of Symbolic Forms, which captures the conceptual structures that successful physics experts learn to see in equations. His work has also concentrated on methodological issues related to the study of conceptual change. In more recent projects, he has applied techniques from natural language processing to analyze interview protocols. Sherin is the designer and developer of Tactic Text, a web-based text mining environment designed for qualitative data analysts. Tactic can be accessed at http://tactic.readthedocs.io.
