Biography

Bruce Spiegelman received a Bachelor of Science degree from the College of William and Mary and his doctorate from Princeton University. He completed his postdoctoral training at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and joined the faculty of Harvard Medical School and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in 1982. He has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Medicine as a Foreign Associate, as well as being a member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO). His research primarily focuses on the molecular basis of energy homeostasis and tissue development, utilizing adipogenesis in muscle as primary model systems. His areas of expertise include the biochemical mechanisms underlying metabolic diseases, particularly obesity and insulin-resistant type 2 diabetes, alongside muscle diseases. Additionally, he has a significant interest in inhibiting cancer cell growth and understanding the pathways that alter cell metabolism and DNA repair.
