Professor Dr. Bruce Sutherland

Biography

Bruce Sutherland is a Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Alberta. He holds a Bachelor of Mathematics from the University of Waterloo and both a Master’s and PhD in Physics from the University of Toronto. He has held various academic positions, including Research Associate at the University of Cambridge and Professor at the University of Alberta since 2007. His research spans environmental fluid dynamics, with a focus on stratified flows, internal waves, and particle-laden flows. Sutherland has served as Director of the Institute of Geophysical Research and held editorial roles with several scientific journals. His work involves laboratory experiments, numerical simulations, and theoretical investigations in climatology and environmental applications. Sutherland has been recognized with multiple awards, including the McCalla Research Professorship and being elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society. He collaborates broadly on problems related to atmosphere-ocean dynamics and has published extensively in the field.
